Reclaiming Remembrance
Reflecting on the World War II in the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine
Gedenken gegen den Krieg (Память против войны / Пам’ять проти війни / Reclaiming remembrance) is an alliance of civil society initiatives that came together in Berlin in spring 2022, immediately after the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Its goal is to rethink the culture of remembrance surrounding the Second World War and to counteract its political instrumentalisation to justify Russia’s current aggression.
Since 2022, the alliance has organised a two-day event every year on 8 and 9 May in Treptow Park, at the Soviet Memorial. A tent camp is set up there with exhibitions, a stage, interactive formats and a place for personal remembrance. Here we talk about the Second World War in the light of today’s events, about the victims, forgotten stories and Europe’s responsibility towards Ukraine.
Our goals
- To rethink the historical significance of 8 and 9 May and the memorial in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine
- To inform visitors about the crimes of the Soviet and Russian regimes and about the connections between the past and the current war
- To call on German society and the government to acknowledge Germany’s historical responsibility not only towards Russia, but also towards Ukraine
- To create a modern, open and humane culture of remembrance – without propaganda, with respect for every human experience
Why is this important?
Eighty years after the end of the World War II, Europe is once again facing a historic test. Russia’s war against Ukraine is accompanied by a dangerous manipulation of history: the Kremlin is using the victory over Nazism to justify new acts of aggression. We are convinced that genuine remembrance should protect against the repetition of evil and not serve as a justification for violence.

📍 Soviet memorial in Treptow Park
An diesen zwei Tage wurden auf dem Gelände präsentiert:
- eine Gedenkwand mit Fotos und Dokumenten aus Familienarchiven – ein Ort für persönliche Geschichten und individuelle Erinnerungen
- die Ausstellung „Vergessene Verbrechen – wie es zum aktuellen Krieg kam“, die den Verbrechen des sowjetischen und russischen Regimes gewidmet ist
- eine Fotoausstellung über zerstörte ukrainische Städte
- die interaktive Aktion „Sitz und schau” über die Mechanismen der russischen Propaganda
- das Vorlesen der Namen der auf dem Gelände begrabenen Soldat:innen der Roten Armee.
- Reden von Politiker:innen, Menschenrechtsaktivist:innen, musikalische Beiträge sowie Gedichtlesungen und Kranzniederlegungen
- Führungen durch die Gedenkstätte in verschiedenen Sprachen von Memorial Deutschland
Alle Formate finden in mehreren Sprachen statt – Deutsch, Ukrainisch, Russisch und Englisch –, um so offen und inklusiv wie möglich zu sein.
